As Madeleine is all about simple, natural yet delicious food so you don’t feel bored or deprived the brief was to create a lush, intimate and healthy baby shower. Pearl & Pear founder Sarah Kay at The Edit styled the day alongside God-Mothers-to-be Millie Mackintosh and best friend Sorcha.

Just stateside for many years, baby showers are now becoming increasingly popular in the UK. Any excuse for a celebration we say! The concept is to shower the expectant mother with lots of lovely gifts to make the first few weeks of motherhood easier.

the styling and menu

The inspiration behind choosing Clifton Nurseries as the venue, stemmed from Madeleine’s love of all things organic, healthy and natural. Picture a greenhouse surrounded in gorgeous jungle greenery with natural sunlight beaming through. The wrought iron tables were dressed with mini bubble vases holding freesias, peonies and blush carnations. Each place setting contained Kilkie Sands calligraphy adorned doilies detailing the menu on offer – such a gorgeous addition.

Giant transparent balloons with ferns in them from Bubblegum Balloons added a really fun touch and a great instagram photo opportunity! This was all complemented by pops of colour in the food. Everyone indulged in gluten and dairy free cakes by MonAnnie Cakes and seriously yummy colourful meringues by the Meringue Girls.

There was no table plan either in order to keep an informal atmosphere and the main focal point on the drink and cake stands.

Events expert Sarah Kay said, “We had a game of ‘guess the baby photo’ with all pictures of friends who attended framed in gorgeous gold glass and dotted amongst the flowers. At the present table, gifts were piled high. With this shower, all guests bought a book for the baby to enjoy and a jar was filled throughout the event with messages of advice for Maddy.”

“Thank you Pearl & Pear for bringing together some of the most fantastic suppliers for my gorgeous baby shower. You were a dream to work with – every detail was thought of. The decor was to die for and the day ran so smoothly. I now have so many amazing memories with my closest friends and family – and some gorgeous photographs to cherish. Thank you!”

the invitation

If the baby shower isn’t going to be a big surprise for the expectant mother-to-be then definitely speak to her about the guest list.

We love using Doodle as a great way to easily find a date when most people are available. All guests can just tick the dates they can make it and then you can see the majority date. After this, send your invitations – Pearl & Pear partners at Papier have some beautiful options that you can design online. They will help with pre-designed invitations, however remember to include the key information:

• Who the baby shower is for!
• Date and time of the shower
• The address
• Ask for dietary requirements
• RSVP phone number and/or email address
• RSVP-by date (usually about two weeks before the event so you have time to follow-up on anyone outstanding)

choosing a fun theme

It’s always great fun to have a theme. When you’ve chosen one, it will naturally then unify the different elements of the day from the invitations to the cakes. Here are a few ideas that always go down well: afternoon tea, polka dot, storybook baby shower, flower, tropical, monochrome, all white, traditional boy and girl themed (if they are aware of the gender). You could even do an altogether different twist on it and have a children’s baby shower so that any brothers or sisters can join in on the celebrations too!

baby shower etiquette – do’s and don’t’s

DO:

• RSVP promptly! It’s just polite for any invitation
• Make sure you always fill out the dietary requirements section, even if you don’t have any
• Buy or make a lovely, thoughtful gift. Some nice ideas are your favourite baby book, blankets, baby products, photo frames, clothing. Or if you just want to treat the mummy-to-be; a massage, mani/pedi, jewellery, perhaps even a voucher for somewhere. The list is endless.

DON’T:

• Have a touch of the mummy-to-be’s tummy without asking first!
• Bring along any uninvited guests! Baby showers tend to be girly events and are a handful of closest friends and family
• Offer strong opinions on parenting choices. Now is really not the time!
