The day to pull on your most festive outfit with pride is almost here! Christmas Jumper day this year is on Friday 14th of December, so if you haven’t already got yourself and your little ones a seasonal sweater or a crazy Christmas cardi, buy or borrow a wonderful woolly. Or get knitting and go crazy with the tinsel and make your own magical masterpiece!
the first stitch – where christmas jumpers all started
Christmas Jumper Day began back in 2012 and now is an annual fundraising campaign organised by the Save the Children charity. Everyone is encouraged to make the world better with a sweater and raise funds for Save the Children by wearing a Christmas jumper and donating to the charity.
So whether you go for a glitzy, shimmering, light-up jumper, step out in style in a designer creation, or keep it cute with a classic knit, the money you raise can help make a world of difference to children’s lives in both the UK and internationally. It is Save the Children's aim that every child born on this planet feels healthy and happy in the early years of their lives – now that’s a good reason to take part and pull on your best knit!
cosy to cool
Christmas Jumper Day has now become one of our favourite Christmas traditions and somewhere along the way Christmas jumpers got cool! Once considered a fashion faux pas, Christmas jumpers given by kindly relatives got tucked away on Boxing Day never seeing the light of day again. Perhaps it was Mark Darcy’s reindeer number in Bridget Jones or maybe Wham’s Last Christmas video that turned the tides? But now, Christmas jumpers in all colours, loud, bright, garish, sweet, pretty and even the downright ugly are cool!
make your own - its sew simple
The best thing about Christmas Jumper Day is there are no rules – but the more festive the better!
Get crafty with your little ones and make your own. If you’re not quite up to knitting from scratch, why not buy a plain knit or find a worn out woolly and give it a new lease of life. Add baubles, cotton wool snowmen and tinsel. Get little ones winding wool to make pom poms. Sew on a felt tree and get little hands to stick on sequins and use glitter glue to decorate. Go big and bright or cute and Christmassy.
If you’ve not got time to make your own, don’t worry you’ll find Christmas jumpers just a click away! Choose from cosy knits with everything from Santa and his reindeer to cute classic Fairisle designs. Or why not take it a step further and dress your little one in a complete Christmas outfit! A Christmas pudding outfit is certainly a great photo opportunity if not practical for playtime!
Why not make Christmas Jumper Day extra special this year and have a Christmas Jumper Day party - this is the perfect theme if your little one’s birthday falls around the same time. Pack it full of festive fun and raise money for a good cause too!
Make Christmas jumper decorations, sweater shaped sandwiches and Christmas cardi cookies. Have prizes for the best Christmas knits, play pass the Christmas present and pin the nose on Rudolph games.
Whatever wonderful woolly, jolly jumper or crafty creation you wear and whatever festive fun or silly stuff you get up to on December 15thremember – everyone who takes part will help ensure that every child gets to have a brighter future.
