congratulations on your baby's first ever poo!
It's dark and tarry, a bit like engine oil, but it's totally normal
this is meconium. It's a mix of amniotic fluid, mucus, skin cells and whatever else baby swallowed in your womb
it looks really weird but it doesn't stink: smellier poos will be on their way in a few days time

too wet?

baby poo should be more liquidy than yours, but if it's really runny they have diarrhoea. If it doesn't clear up on its own after a few days, phone your doctor

too hard?

if your little one is straining and turning out poos that look like little dark nuggets, they're probably constipated. Speak to your GP for tips on softening things up

take note

keep a diary of when your little one pees or poos so that you know what's normal for them. If they don't go in their first 48 hours, tell your midwife or GP
