I bought the newborn size for my daughter, who was 9 pounds at the time, and these were very tight on her.
The wrap has an elasticated section on it to hold the pad in, but this gets covered in poop which means that every time your baby poops you have to change the wrap as well as the pad.
I don't recommend these nappies - I'm much happier with the bumGenius!

Also the outers got dirty everytime and the stains did not wash out, despite soaking and washing with nappy soak and detergent at 60 degrees as directed. I would not reccomend these nappies.

Well I have not been disappointed, this is a fantastic system, easy to use and comfortable for my baby. I bought one trial newborn as the small were too big, however this was handy as it is shaped to fit around the belly button peg and used the disposable pads untill she was 4 weeks old. I use the small kit pack from 4 weeks onwards, purchasing another 4 reuseable innners for them. We have been on them for 3 weeks now and its great, soak in the pale in some nappy soak then into the wash, with a scoop of vanish whitener and some fairy on a quick cycle them come up amazingly clean.
The smart nappy is not designed to hold loads of fluid therefore to benefit must be changed about every 4 hours when using the reusable liners, however the disposable pads are great for nightime.
All I can say is give them a whirl, I am more than satisfied.

I have wasted over £80 buying these and am now using disposables. i wonder who sized these nappies i would request my money back but i bought them well before baby came as you do. i followed all the instructions to a t just to make sure i was doing it correctly. I actually get angry thinking about it as we dont have the money to waste. thanks for nothing. WARNING do not buy these nappies. i wish i had bought the old stye terries.will never buy mothercare own anything again.

read moreI have a lot of experience with washable nappies and have tried many different styles and brands. I was excited to try out the Mothercare Smart Nappy system on my newborn. I bought one of the trial kits along with a few extra washable inserts and one bag of disposable liners to try as well.
My favourite thing was the fit, very neat and not at all bulky. The wrap is soft and felt nice to the touch. Certainly on a very young baby I have never found a better fitting reusable nappy. Unfortunately this is where my affinity with these nappies ended.
The reusable inserts weren't particularly absorbent (compared to other washable options) and because of the soft edging on the wraps had to be changed very frequently to avoid wicking. It wasn't really possible to change just the insert and reuse the wrap without washing because the elasticated ends that hold the insert in place would almost always become wet (silly design if you ask me) and certainly soiled if poo was present. If you want to use these nappies then I would suggest treating them more like a stuffable nappy system where it is expected that you change the cover with each nappy change.
As for the disposable inserts, this just seemed like a double whammy on the environment. Because you have to change the wrap with each use you are essentially washing the nappy & also chucking the insert (which in my opinion is as large or larger than the amount of material going into a typical disposable nappy anyway).
So, great fit on a very young baby but as a long term nappy solution I wouldn't recommend it.
